16 leading operators of online casinos, online poker rooms and online sportsbook are on their way to being able to legally offer their interactive gaming services to Spanish gamblers. All the operators have either completed the license application process or are in the process of finalizing it.

Spain had an interesting journey on its way for a regulated online gaming market. Ever since the beginning of 2010 the Spanish government has attempted to pass different types of legislation that would help it run a regulated online gambling market.

The task proved to be anything but easy since the Spanish government has to ensure the gaming legislation will be in accordance with EU trade laws. In addition they had to ensure that such a move will be profitable for the Spanish government and the people as Spain is in a deep recession and the state urgently needs to find new streams of revenue.

Initially the Spanish government passed a law that required operators to pay a turnover tax. This law was criticized by the Spanish Association of online Gamblers (AEDAPI), European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) and the Remote Gambling Association (RGA).

Eventually the Spanish government realized that the turnover tax was not workable and amended the law to include a reasonable gross profits tax. This move was welcomed by all the critics of the previous law.

Now that all internet gambling operators had months to apply for a license to offer interactive gaming services, it has emerged that 16 leading companies have or will have such a license and will be able to provide their services to Spanish gamblers starting 2012.

It is rumored that licensees include such big companies as Bwin, Ladbrokes, PokerStars, William Hill and many others. All these companies paid €2 million each for the initial license and will also be paying taxes on their gross profits which is bound to help the Spanish economy.
