Iowa Takes Gamblers’ Winnings 03.10.2012

The US state of Iowa has been following through on its promise to collect gambling winnings from those who hit it big but still owe the money for their back-taxes, court fees or child support. Just two years ago, the state instituted a program in which gamblers who win any type of jackpot worth $1200 or more will have to be up to date on any money owed to the state or state-appointed child support payments.

Iowa lawmakers became tired of seeing those who claimed they couldn’t pay fees but could gamble at the race track, casino or play the lottery and collect their winnings. Now, any winners of at least $1200 must have their names run through a database to ensure that they are in good financial standing before any money can be paid to them. If the winner owes money, the winnings are seized and the money is used to pay the person’s outstanding debt. Since the program was put in place, the state has collected more $5 million in owed payments from almost 4,000 delinquent citizens.

A number of other US states have also instituted similar policies however each state has its own list of debts that are targeted. These states include New Jersey, New Mexico, West Virginia, Colorado, Indiana, Mississippi and Louisiana. Some of these states will even hold winnings over unpaid parking tickets, defaulted student loans and other bad debits which companies were not able to collect on. While it seems to be somewhat of a challenge to keep databases current and up-to-date, many states believe the laws work and that those who are owned money should get paid before winners can collect their jackpots.
