Roulette Players Will Be Affected by New German Legislation 28.03.2012

After arguing for several years over internet gaming laws, 15 of the 16 German States finally agreed on a proposal. The European Commission (EC) was initially reviewing the proposal to make sure that the German states do not create an internal monopoly which goes against the fundamentals of the European Union’s free market principles.

The proposal was submitted to the EC for approval but was met with a somewhat tepid response. The EC reacted positively to the states agreeing to issue 20 gambling licenses instead of 7 and cutting the high tax rate but was not so pleased with the fact that the proposal was only regarding sports betting and poker. This leaves casino games like roulette and many casino-only operators out of the German market.

The German states claimed that casino games can lead to problems like money laundering and gambling addiction which is a ridiculous statement since sports betting can lead to the exact same problems. The EC did not feel that the proposal showed enough data to warrant and support the ban on online casinos.

The EC has essentially agreed to give the German states a two year “trial run” to determine if their proposal can regulate internet gambling while also providing a viable and sustainable business model.

Not everyone is happy with the gambling plan proposed. Gaming operators like Bwin.party had hoped that the EC would have a harsher reaction to the proposal and its ban on online casinos. Since there is no previous framework set up in Germany to address this problem, only time will tell what the future of online casinos operating in Germany will be.

German gamblers who like to play games like roulette in online casinos will now get no support or help from their country if they encounter a problem with an online casino since they are not approved to operate in Germany.

This does not mean that German roulette players should stop playing at online casinos. The best advice we can offer is that players check out any online casino to make sure that it is reputable and has a legitimate license in a neighbouring country.

We are sure this story will keep developing so check back for the most up-to date information.
