UK Online Gambling Tax can Drive Roulette Players to Unregulated Gambling Sites 15.01.2012

For the past year many in the UK are hearing that online gambling should be further regulated in the UK and taxed amid concerns regarding the continued recession, unemployment and the weakening British Pound Sterling.

The UK has always been a nation of gamblers with all gambling activity legal in the country that incorporates in it England, Scotland and Wales. Betting shops can be found on the streets of every city and town center and there are many casinos across the country. They are also avid lottery and bingo players, with bingo halls scattered all over the nation.

Due to the fragile state that the UK economy has found itself under since the big Subprime Crises of 2008 there are stronger calls to increase taxation on operators in order to line with cash the depleting pockets of the treasury.

The online casino and sportsbook operators William Hill has commissioned an independent report from international survey group Deloitte which demonstrated that an increase in tax will drive punters away from regulated sites and onto rogue casinos that do not offer them any protection under UK law.

Deloitte’s report brought as an example what happened in France and Italy since they regulated their online gambling market and imposed high taxes. Players in these countries were driven to smaller unregulated sites that were able to offer the player more as they were not bound by local tax laws, and small operators in these countries were forced out of the industry due to spiraling costs.

Ralph Topping CEO of William Hill said” “Money will always find a way out. More people will go overseas to unregulated sites where the consumer is not protected. I hope the government sees sense on this.”

It remains to be seen how the UK government will choose to proceed and whether it will truly sabotage a system that so far has kept operators, roulette players and other gamblers, and the government happy.
