The amount of money that has been taken in from casino-style gambling machines in the 1st half of 2012 is staggering and shocking to many people. William Hill, which has 2,371 betting shops, recently reported players had wagered approximately £6.6 billion on the Fixed Odds Betting Terminals (FOBTs) in their shops. Another popular company with FOBTs reported that players had wagered about £5.9 billion and between the two gambling companies more than £350 million was earned in net profits.

These two top companies have over 17,000 FOBTs which accounts for about half of the machines in the country. When you take into account the total amount of FOBTs is around 32,000 in the UK, players could be wagering as much as £46 billion during the 2012 year.

FOBT machines feature either a slot game or a roulette game and when you look at the amount of money that can be wagered on either machine, it is easy to see how the wagers add up quickly. For example, the roulette machines allow players to bet up to £100 per round and up to 3 rounds per minute. In one hour players can easily wager up to £18,000 and the machines have a payout rate of approximately 97.3%.

The growing popularity of these machines can be seen when comparing the fact that William Hill made an average of £648 per week in 2007 as compared to £924 per week in 2012. Some politicians and anti-gambling activists have said that it was a mistake to lower the gambling laws which has been seen as the catalyst for the rise in playing FOBTs. The Shadow Minister for Sport, Clive Efford, has stated that gambling laws are now being reviewed and the government is looking into the “impact of FOBTs on problem gambling”.
