American Roulette Odds

American roulette is one of the games that offer the worst odds of all available casino games. It is true that there are games that have far worse winnings odds however, when looking at the top games played in most casinos it is clear to see that American roulette does not favor the player.

To understand how the betting odds of American roulette need to be calculated it is important to understand the main principle of betting odds. The odds are calculated by figuring out how many chances the player has of winning versus how many chances the player has of losing.

American roulette uses 38 different numbered slots located on the roulette wheel that include the numbers 1 through 36, 0 (zero) and 00 (double zero). Now let us assume that a player is making a split bet on two numbers, the odds will be calculated as 38-to-2 (or 18-to-1).

However it is important to remember that the casino does not offer you a payout for a winning bet that is in accordance with the true odds of your bet. Instead they offer a lower payout in order to create an advantage for the casino over the player. This advantage is called House Edge.

American roulette bets are divided into two groups of bets; inside bets and outside bets. The inside bets offer higher payouts than the outside bets but have a much lower probability of occurring. The outside bets offer lower payouts but offer the player a much better chance of winning the bet.

American Roulette Inside Bets Odds

Bet Other names Payout Winning Odds %
Straight Up Bet Single number / Any number 35 to 1 1/38 = 2.63%
Split Bet 2 numbers 17 to 1 2/38 = 5.26%
Street Bet 3 numbers 11 to 1 3/38 = 7.89%
Corner Bet 4 numbers, Square 8 to 1 4/38 = 10.52%
Basket Bet 5 numbers / Top Line / First 5 5 to 1 5/38 = 13.25%
Line Bet 6 numbers / double street / 6 line 5 to 1 6/38 = 15.78%

American Roulette Outside Bets Odds

Bet Other names Payout Winning Odds %
Column Bet 1st column / 2nd column / 3rd column 2 to 1 12/38 = 31.57%
Dozen Bet 1-12 / 13-24 / 25-36 2 to 1 12/38 – 31.57%
Color Bet Red / Black 1 to 1 18/38 = 47.36%
Even/Odd Bet 1 to 1 18/38 = 47.36%
Low/High Bet 1-18 / 19-36 1 to 1 18/38 = 47.36%

Generally speaking players are advised to stick to outside bets. Although their payouts are far less tempting than the payouts of inside bets, they can provide the player with steady wins that although conservative, will keep the player playing roulette for longer. Focusing on inside bets tends to burn through the player’s bankroll very quickly.
