Double Zero Roulette History

Roulette School

The game of roulette is one of the casino games that is most noticeable upon entering any casino anywhere around the world. It’s a classic gambling game that has enchanted people from all walks of life for several centuries. In many places around the world the double zero roulette is also referred to as American roulette.

The name roulette comes from French and is a diminutive of the term “little wheel”. However regardless of the French name, gaming historians seem to be unable to agree on the exact origin of the game and there is no guarantee we would ever have a singular version of how double zero roulette came to be.

Origin of the Double Zero Roulette History

There is clear historical evidence that wheel-based games have existed in ancient China, where soldiers used them as a torture device and made bets on the outcome of the torture. The interesting fact is that the ancient Chinese torture wheels had the number 666 inscribed in the middle of the wheel. It’s even more interesting when taking into account the fact that when adding all the numbers in the modern double zero roulette wheel the outcome is also 666.

There is also evidence that during the Roman Empire the military commanders used wheel-based gambling games as a measure of improving soldiers’ morale in a way that is reminiscent of the modern Wheel of Fortune game.

Up until this point in history there is agreement among gaming historians. It’s the 17th century that splits them into two camps; the French camp and the English/Italian camp.

The gaming historians that belong to the French camp believe that the modern roulette was an unplanned invention by renowned French mathematician Blaise Pascal who was working on a inventing a perpetual motion device during the 17th century and ended up inventing modern roulette.

The English/Italian camp attributes the invention to a combination of Italian and English games that were popular in Europe in the 17th century. They claim that English wheel games such as E.O., Reiner and Ace of Hearts, together with Italian board games such as Hoca and Biribi are the foundation of the modern roulette game.

Failing in Europe

During the 17th and 18th century roulette was played with a wheel that had both the zero and double zero slots. However the Europeans did not like the double zero roulette game and it was not until the 19th century that brothers Louis and François Blanc changed the roulette wheel to only include the single zero slot.

The Blanc brothers owned a spa and casino resort in Germany and were eager to introduce the modern roulette game to their guests, however their guests did not take to the game as the double zero roulette offers a high house edge.

The brothers decided to change the roulette wheel so it will include one less slot thus lowering the edge the casino had over the player.

The game quickly gained popularity that grew thanks to François Blanc taking it to Monte Carlo after being asked by the Monaco royal family to move to Monte Carlo and take over management of the royal casino. Europe’s aristocracy took great pleasure in playing single zero roulette and helped cement the game’s status as a classy and regal game.

Succeeding in America

Following the French Revolution, many French people left their torn country in the hope of finding a better way of life on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. Many French immigrants moved along the Mississippi river and onto Louisiana.

In those days New Orleans in Louisiana was the gambling capital of the US and has many casinos and casino boats operating in and around it.

The French immigrants brought with them many different gambling games such as baccarat, blackjack, Chemin de Fer and roulette that were popular in Europe.

The American casino operators did not take kindly to the single zero roulette due to its low house edge and preferred to use a different wheel that had zero, double zero, an American Eagle icon and the numbers 1 to 28.

Eventually the Americans settled on the traditional double zero roulette wheel that used the numbers 1 to 36. The game became very popular and is still offered at every casino in the US.

Double Zero Roulette Online

The 1990’s brought with them a technological advancement that has forever changed all our lives. This technological advancement is the internet and it changed the way we consume information and entertainment.

One form of entertainment that had a smooth and very successful transition to the online arena is gambling. Many online casinos opened their doors to players from all over the world, bringing all the excitement of the casino directly into our homes.

The game of roulette has again proved itself as a top gambling game by becoming one of the most popular casino games in the world of internet gaming.
