How to Play American Roulette

Roulette School

American roulette has been played since the 18th century after the European roulette traveled to the US with French immigrants, fleeing the French Revolution and settling in the State of Louisiana where the city of New Orleans was the gambling capital of the US.

The French immigrants brought with them many games such as Baccarat, Blackjack and Craps. The Americans were fond of these games and started playing them in New Orleans casinos. However the casino operators did not take kindly to European roulette and changed it many times until they have settled on the American Roulette version that is played until today.

Game Objective

The objective of American Roulette is to make correct predictions as to which numbered slot the roulette ball will land on. Making correct guesses awards the player with a payout according to the type of bet they made and the amount of the bet.

Before You Start

There is one important thing to know before approaching the roulette table; roulette is played with special playing chips that do not have any markings on them that denote currency denomination. These chips are used exclusively at the roulette tables and you need to get them from the croupier at the table you are about to play.

You can exchange cash or regular casino chips for the roulette chips and the total amount of your buy-in divided by the number of chips you received will determine the value of each individual chip.

You will also notice that the chips you were given are of a different color than the chip of the player next to you. In roulette every player is given different colored chips so that the croupier will be able to distinguish between the bets of different players.

Once you are done playing roulette you can exchange them back to regular casino chips with the croupier or go to the cashier cage and exchange your winnings for cash.

Betting Limits

Before you start playing at an American roulette table you need to check what are the minimum and maximum betting limits for the table you are about to play at. Any land casino will have a sign on the roulette table that lists the table limits.

You need to make sure that the lowest bet you make is not lower than the table minimum, otherwise you will be called upon it by the croupier and asked to increase your bet or remove it before the game can continue.

Sometimes there is also a limit of how much a player can wager in total during one round of roulette. For example if the table limit is $2,000 then you will not be able to make a single number bet of $1,000 and $1,500 bet on Red as this will make the total amount you are betting to be $2,500 which is over the limit. Do not worry if you make a mistake. The croupier will always tell you what you did wrong and how to correct it.

How to Play

Take the amount of chips you wish to bet on during the next round of roulette and place them in the designated area on the roulette table. Each type of bet has its own betting area and the placement of the chips needs to be made within the area or on the edges of it, in cases when you make some split bet.

The croupier will then spin the roulette wheel and just before the croupier will drop the ball onto the wheel they will announce “no more bets”. Once the croupier announces this you will not be able to change or remove your bet. Before the call (even after the wheel was spun) you are able to add, change or completely remove your bet.

After the roulette ball has landed on a numbered slot, the croupier will place the dolly (a special marker) on the winning number, then collect all losing bets and start paying off the winners. While the croupier is paying the winners you are welcome to start placing your bets for the next round of play.

American roulette bets are split into two groups of bets. There are inside bets that offer very high payouts but have a low probability of occurring, and outside bets that offer lower payouts but have a much higher probability.
