The Roulette Table
Roulette is played using a roulette table layout that is marked with special boxes and areas that note every type of bet that is available in roulette. Players use chips to place their bets on the roulette table layout.
There is a difference between the table layout of the Single Zero European Roulette and the Double Zero American Roulette.
The Roulette Wheel and Ball
The roulette ball is a small metal ball that is dropped onto the roulette wheel as it spins. The ball lands on a numbered slot which determines the outcome of that round of play.
The roulette wheel has special slots that are numbered from 1 to 36. In European roulette there is also a slot for 0 and in American roulette there is a slot for 0 and 00.
The numbers are all marked as either red or black and the 0 and 00 are marked in green. In numbers ranging from 1-to-10 and 19-to-28 the even numbers are black and the odd numbers are red. With numbers ranging from 11-to-18 and 29-to-36 the even numbers are red and the odd numbers are black.
There is a difference between American and European roulette in the sequence of the numbers on the roulette wheel:

Roulette does not use regular casino chips. It uses special roulette chips that do not display any currency denomination on them. The value of the chips is determined by taking the total buy-in of the player and dividing it by the total number of chips the player was given.
Players wishing to play roulette need to come to the roulette table and exchange their cash or regular casino chips for roulette chips. Each player is given different colored roulette chips so there won’t be any confusion over which player made which bet.
When you are done playing you can exchange your roulette chips for regular casino chips with the croupier or at the cashier cage. If you wish to exchange your roulette chips into cash you will need to do so at the cashier cage.
The croupier (sometimes called the dealer) is responsible for running the game of roulette. The croupier is the one giving out roulette chips to new players coming to play at the table and the one that pays the winners at the end of every round of roulette.
The croupier also spins the roulette wheel and announces “no more bets” just before they are about to drop the roulette ball onto the wheel. Once the croupier made the announcement you are not allowed to add, remove or change bets.
If however you do wish to amend a bet after the croupier announced “no more bets” you can only do so verbally by calling out your amended bet. The croupier then has the right to accept your amended bet or deny it.
Whatever the croupier says is final and it is considered bad manners to argue with them. In some casinos arguing with the croupier (even if done quietly and politely) will get you a visit from the pit boss who is overseeing all the roulette tables and you might be asked to leave the game and maybe even the casino itself.
When playing any type of roulette the objective of the game is always the same and that is to correctly predict the outcome of the spin. Betting on the correct number or group of numbers will award you a payout according to the type and amount of the bet you made.
There are two types of roulette bets; inside bets and outside bets. Inside bets are made on a single number or a small group of numbers and outside bets are made on large groups of numbers.
Those who are new to the game tend to be tempted by the inside bets as they offer very high payouts. However it is important to remember that the higher the payouts the lower are the odds of winning the bet.
Outside bets offer less tempting payouts but have a much higher probability of being a winning bet. As a general rule of thumb it is advised to avoid making inside bets and focus on making single outside bets or a combination of 2 outside bets , for example an Even/Odd bet and a Column bet.
