Roulette School

A Cheval ─ This is French for “Split Bet”.

Action ─ The amount of money bet over the course of a period of time.

Action Player ─ A player who wagers large sums of money and for long periods of time.

American Roulette ─ A version of roulette which uses numbers 1-36, a zero and a double zero (a total of 38 compartments).

American Wheel ─ A roulette wheel with a zero and a double zero.

Backtrack ─ The outer rim of the roulette wheel.

Ball Track ─ The outer rim of the roulette wheel.

Bankroll ─ The total amount of money which a player has to gamble.

Bankroll Management ─ A system or strategy that allows you to wisely manage your bankroll in order to increase it and make it last longer.

Biased Wheel ─ A roulette wheel with an imperfection which changes the probability of certain numbers being hit.

Big Number ─ A number which has been hit more often than what would be expected based on theoretical probability.

Black Bet ─ A bet on a black number.

Cage ─ The booth where the casino cashier sits.

Cancellation Betting System ─ A system which cancels numbers after bets have been won and adds numbers after bets have been lost.

Capping a Bet ─ When a player illegally sneaks more chips to an existing winning bet.

Carre ─ French for “Corner Bet”.

Casino Advantage ─ The edge which the casino has over the player. Usually expressed as a percentage.

Chameleon Strategy ─ A playing strategy where a player tries to mimic winning players in the hope of winning themselves.

Chasing Losses ─ When a player increases his or her bets in order to win back what he or she has lost.

Check Rack ─ The tray which holds the game's chips.

Checks ─ Another way of saying “chips”.

Chips ─ Coloured markers used to place bets.

Cold Table ─ A table where players have been losing.

Column ─ The roulette table layout is divided into three columns of twelve numbers each.

Column Bet ─ A bet placed on one of the three columns of twelve numbers.

Combination Bet ─ A bet which is placed on two or more numbers with one or more chips.

Corner Bet ─ A bet placed on four numbers by placing chips in between these numbers.

Croupier ─ The casino employee who operates on the roulette table.

d'Alembert Betting System ─ A betting system where the bet is increased by one unit after a loss and decreased by one unit after a win.

Dead Table ─ A table which is ready for play but lacks players.

Dealer ─ The employee of the casino whom staffs the games.

Derniere ─ A French word meaning "Last" and refers to the last group of 12 numbers in the Dozen bet.

Double-Up Betting System ─ A system where bets are doubled after a loss.

Double Zero Wheel ─ A roulette wheel with a zero and a double zero.

Douzaine ─ French for “Dozen Bet”.

Dozen Bet ─ A bet on one the the layout's sequences of 12 numbers.

Double Dynamite Roulette System ─ A combination of sector slicing for short-range play and Big Number play.

Drop ─ The total number of markers and money wagered at the tables.

Drop Box ─ The box where money is dropped after a player has cashed into a game and received his or her chips.

European Wheel ─ A wheel with the numbers 1-36 and a single zero.

Edge ─ The advantage one has in a game of roulette.

En Plein ─ French for “Straight-Up Bet”.

En Prison ─ A rule mostly used in European Roulette. Where the player makes an Outside Bet and the ball lands on 0, the player has the option to lose half of his bet or leave the bet on the table for another spin.

European Roulette ─ A version of roulette which uses numbers 1-36 and a single zero (a total of 37 compartments).

European Wheel ─ A roulette wheel with numbers 1-36 and a single zero.

Even Bet ─ A bet on the ball landing on an even number.

Even Money ─ A bet which is paid off at one to one if won.

Fibanacci Betting System ─ A progressive betting system. Each bet is a combination of the last two numbers.

Five Number Bet ─ A single bet that 0, 00, 1, 2 or 3 will be hit next in American Roulette.

Flat Bet ─ A bet of a fixed amount that the player continues to bet regardless of the outcome of previous rounds of betting.

Flat Bettor ─ A player who always bets the same amount and never varies his bets.

Fluctuation in Probability ─ Where numbers appear repeatedly in a way which is out of proportion with their probability of occurring.

French Roulette ─ A version of roulette which uses numbers 1-36 and a single zero (a total of 37 compartments).

French Wheel ─ A roulette wheel with numbers 1-36 and a single zero.

Gambling Stake ─ The amount of money which a player reserves for gambling.

Gland Martingale ─ A limited Martingale System of two steps after a pre-determined number of even-money decisions have been made.

Golden Numbers ─ Numbers which have been hit far more often than what is mathematically probable.

Grand Martingale ─ A variant of the Martingale System. The player doubles his bet and adds one unit after a loss.

High Bet ─ A bet on a high number (19-36).

High Roller ─ A player who bets large sums of money.

Hoca ─ A very early version of the game roulette.

House Edge ─ The advantage which the casino has over a player on a particular bet.

Inside Bet ─ A bet placed on the numbered section of the layout of the roulette wheel.

Impair ─ French for "Odd Bet".

Labouchère Betting System ─ A version of the Cancellation Betting System. The player chooses a sequence of numbers and bets the values of the first and last numbers of this sequence. If the player wins, numbers are crossed out of the sequence. If the player loses, numbers are added to the sequence.

Layout ─ The design on the top of the table which has been imprinted with the choice of bets which a player can make.

Line Bet ─ A bet that one of six numbers will win (two rows of three numbers).

Low Bet ─ A bet on a low number (1-18).

Low Roller ─ A player who always bets small amounts of money.

Manque ─ French for "Low Bet".

Martingale Betting System ─ A version of Double Up Betting System. The player doubles his bets after every loss.

Money Management ─ Whatever methods or strategies which a player uses to ensure that his bankroll lasts.

Money Plays ─ The call a player makes to alert the dealer that he or she is betting cash and not chips.

Negative Expectation ─ An expected loss from a gambling game over an extended period of time and is related to the house edge that ensures that over time the casino will always win.

Negative Progression ─ Any system of betting where the player increases his bets after a loss.

No Action ─ A call which the dealer makes in order to inform players that the casino will not cover a particular bet or that a particular decision or spin does not count.

Noir ─ French for "Black Bet".

Odd Bet ─ A bet on an odd number.

Odds ─ The likelihood that a particular event will occur.

Outside Bet ─ A 1-1 or 2-1 bet found on the outside of the table's layout.

Paddle ─ A tool used to push money into the drop box.

Pair ─ French for "Even Bet".

Parlay ─ When a player doubles his bet for the next spin.

Passe ─ French for "High Bet".

Pinching ─ When a player removes chips from the table illegally after the result of the game has been announced.

Pit ─ An area at a casino which consists of a number of gaming tables.

Player-Clocking ─ When a player observes which players have won and what strategies they have used in order to effectively apply the Chameleon Strategy.

Positive Progression ─ A system of betting where the player increases his bets after every win.

Premiere ─ The first group of twelve numbers in the Dozen Bet.

Quarter Bet ─ A bet placed on four numbers by placing chips in between these numbers.

Red Bet ─ A bet on a red number.

Reverse-Martingale Betting System ─ The reverse of the Martingale Betting System. The player doubles his bets after every win (rather than every loss).

Rouge ─ French for "Red Bet".

Roulette Ball ─ The ball which is dropped on the spinning roulette wheel and which determines the winning number.

Roulette Table ─ The total area of the layout and the roulette wheel.

Section Shooting ─ When the ball is placed in a particular section of the wheel.

Section Slicing ─ The act of dividing the wheel's numbers into sections in order to see which have been hitting and work out if there is any kind of bias.

Session ─ The period of time which a player plays a particular game at the casino, uninterrupted by breaks.

Session Stake ─ The amount of money which a player puts aside for one play session.

Shill ─ A person employed by the casino to play games which are underplayed in order to encourage others to play them.

Short Odds ─ Odds offered by the casino which offer less than the true odds of the wager.

Short Run ─ A limited amount of time during a game during which probability theory seems to be affected by fluctuations and streaks.

Single-Zero Roulette ─ A version of roulette which uses numbers 1-36 and a single zero (a total of 37 compartments).

Sixain ─ French for "Line Bet" or "Six Number Bet".

Six Number Bet ─ A bet that one of six numbers will win (two rows of three numbers).

Split Bet ─ A bet a player makes that one of two numbers will hit on the next spin.

Spread ─ The difference between the maximum and the minimum bets which a player makes.

Square Bets ─ A bet placed on four numbers by placing chips in between these numbers.

Stack ─ A unit of 20 roulette chips.

Straight Up Bet ─ A bet a player makes on one particular number.

Street Bet ─ A bet placed on three numbers.

Sucker Bet ─ A single bet that 0, 00, 1, 2 or 3 will be hit next in American Roulette.

Surrender ─ An option for players whereby the casinos only take half of their lost bets when 0 or 00 are hit.

Table Hopping ─ Moving from table to table in the casino.

Transversale ─ French for "Street Bet".

Trio Bet ─ A bet placed on three numbers.

Troller ─ A bet a player makes after the dealer has announced that "no more bets" are allowed.

True Odds ─ The actual probability that an event will occur.

Vigorish ─ The casino tax on a particular wager.

Wager ─ Another word for "bet".

Wheel Chips ─ Special chips which are exclusively used in the game of roulette.

Wheel-Clocking ─ Either keeping track of the results of wheel spins or electronically or visually timing the wheel's speed in order to predict which number the roulette ball will land on.

Wheel Head ─ The section of the roulette wheel which contains numbered pockets.

Wheel Strategies ─ Strategies which exploit the wheels' imperfections in order to gain an edge.
